Good design is environmentally friendly: Design makes an important contribution to the preservation of the environment. Care and accuracy in the design process show respect for the consumer. Good design is thoroughly down to the smallest detail: Nothing must be arbitrary or left to chance. Unlike fashionable design, it lasts for many years – even in today’s caste society. Good design is long lasting: It avoids being fashionable, and therefore never looks old. It does not try to manipulate the consumer with promises that cannot be kept. Good design is honest: It does not make a product more innovative, powerful or valuable than it really is.
Their design should therefore be both neutral and restrained, to allow for users’ self-expression. They are neither decorative objects nor works of art. Good design is unobtrusive: Products that fulfill a purpose are like tools. Even better, it can make the product talk. Good design makes a product understandable: This clarifies the product structure. But only well-executed objects can be beautiful. Good design is aesthetic: The aesthetic quality of a product is an integral part of the useful because the products we use every day affect our person and our well-being. Good design emphasizes the usefulness of a product, while ignoring anything that could possibly impair it. It must satisfy certain criteria, not only functionally but also psychologically and aesthetically. Good design makes a product useful: A product is purchased for use. But innovative design always develops in step with innovative technology, and can never be a goal in itself. Technological development always offers new opportunities for innovative design.

The last repetitions have dropped the curved edges that caused the screen to crack if it falls to the side. Maybe this had happened under Ive, but Evans Hankey, who now leads the industrial design team, has overseen many other adaptations that seem to indicate a change in philosophy. Gone is the so-called “butterfly” keyboard, which made the device thinner, but whose bulky mechanics made it harder to type goodbye also to the Touch Bar, a touch-sensitive stripe display at the top of the keyboard that can display browser functions one moment and shuffle toolkits the next, but was almost impossible to use without looking at the back are HDMI ports, which allow you to connect your computer to HD monitors without using an adapter. Headline features that were released five years ago under the auspices of Ives have been scrapped.

Monday’s unveiling of a new Macbook Pro series of laptops provides evidence of the shift. From iPhone to Apple TV to Macbook, the days of “The user is cursed, we think this looks cool.” Since he resigned as chief designer at the end of 2019, it seems that Apple has emphasized the feature again. There was a feeling that without the moderate influence of the late Steve Jobs, maybe I was starting to prioritize aesthetics a little too much. Steve Jobs’ design-first approach to Apple’s product development was considered groundbreaking, but after Jobs, with Jony Ive in charge of design, it was sometimes questionable whether a device’s appearance took precedence over usability.
